A coaching philosophy is something that most likely changes and evolves over the course of a a coaches career but there must be a few core ideas that remain constant over time. Just as every coach has their own coaching philosophy that they preach day in and day out, players have their own unique skill set that makes them who they are as players. I think it is important for coaches to realize each players unique set of skills they might offer to the team. Its not a matter of coaching to your philosophy as much as it is coaching to your teams strength. I believe in the celebration of every individuals unique talent and abilities. Coaches need to evolve and adjust to their team just as much as the players do throughout a game, season or their careers.
I. Education (why we are here) - The number one reason why any of your are here is to get your college degree, I want to see everyone graduate. - Remember we are student athletes not just athletes - Minimum GPA of 2.0 is required to be eligible and anyone with a GPA of 2.5 or lower will be required to enroll with a tutor on campus (they are free so take advantage of it). - Grade checks will go out in the middle of every term
II. Practice - Practice will be the single most important activity we do as ball players, everyone is required to be there on time - Proper practice attire involves grey pants, blue and navy hat, a navy belt, navy shirt, and navy socks - Our conditioning will always be based on our effort level in practice. We will practice with a high level of intensity that will mirror our effort in games
III. Atmosphere - We are all here as one, we have eachothers back on and off the field, it has to be this way and if it is not then we will not be successful - Success is not a coicidence it is a bi product of hard work and dedication, those who work hard and dedicate themselves to their craft will succeed. If we dedicate ourselves as a group to these two principles then we will all be successful
IV. Character - "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country", JFK. Be selfless, baseball is a team game and their is no room for selfishness. Individual sacrifices must be made for the progress and success of the team - The best way to lead is by example, this program is fueled by individuals that push themselves and eachother by setting a good example
V. Heart and Desire - These two qualities alone are what being a ball player is all about - Play the game hard and play the game the right way. This game has been around for a long time and will still be around long after your are gone, don't act like you are the first one to ever hit a home run or smack a double to the gap (showboating is out) - It is so important that we keep our composure at all times and never let the situation get us too high or too low, we want to be steady as a team
